Millions of Kenyans who possess skills that have not been formally recognized now have a chance to get certified in a move aimed at recognizing skills acquired through workplace learning.
The government has introduced a new model known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), through which individuals who are already skilled do not have to undergo formal classroom training to obtain a certificate.
RVIBS, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kabete National Polytechnic, is among the approved RPL centres in Kenya mandated to implement the new model.
Director of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Delivery Unit, Mr. Stanley Maindi, hailed RVIBS for the move, terming RPL a transformative initiative championed by the Kenyan government.
“We are seeking to formally acknowledge and certify the knowledge, skills, and competencies individuals have acquired through informal, non-formal, and experiential learning, such as work experience, self-study, and community involvement,” Maindi said.

RVIBS Principal Ms. Mildred Matibe said RPL is a great opportunity for those in the Jua Kali sector.
“RVIBS is providing skilled individuals with an opportunity to have their knowledge, experience, and competencies formally recognized. Those in Jua Kali trades such as mechanics, salonists, and electricians can now obtain certificates after demonstrating that they have acquired skills through industry experience,” Matibe said.
“Whether you acquired your skills through work experience, self-learning, or informal training, RPL offers a pathway to certification and professional recognition,” she added.
