The institution was incepted in September 2006 in Kericho Town as Kericho Beauty School with ten students from Deliverance and PCEA churches. In the year 2007 seventy nine students were enrolled for hair dressing and beauty therapy. The institute relocated to Nakuru in mid 2008 under the name Rift Valley Institute of Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy.
In the year 2011, as result of the dynamic labour market, the institution realigned itself to provide a wide range of quality labour force to the market. It is through this background that the institution initiated other programs that include and not limited to the following: Travel and Tourism, Hotel and Catering, Teacher Training, Early Childhood Education, Community Development, Languages, Business Management, just but to mention in 2011. In order to be all inclusive, the institution was further renamed as Rift Valley Institute of Business Studies. It has not however delinked itself from the previous name based on its foundational programmes of Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy.
In 2011/2012 the institution partnered with Rongai Constituency to train 100 students on hairdressing and beauty therapy. Between 2013-2017 the institution partnered with Bahati constituency to train 1,500 Bahati youths on various courses..
RVIBS returned to Kericho with a new campus in 2016 and also acquired new premises in Nakuru at rime Building.
The institution, in the need to keep its programs as relevant to the market demands as possible, has partnered with various highly rated national and international examination bodies that include; KNEC, ICM, DIT, City & Guilds.
